A few precious moments from the Drakensberg Mountains, through fern forests and past mountain streams to the studio, in search of the little white orchid Disperis fanniniae.

I’m feeling so calm and inspired after a wonderful week of nature journaling at the @cavern.drakensberg led by Elsa Pooley and Gillian Condy, with four other lovely ladies.

Now I’m back at my easel, for a daintly little orchid painting on vellum… progress to follow.

February started off on a high country note with “A Floral Feast”, the fundraiser event for the @himeville_museum. I loved presenting to the enthusiastic crowd, seeing the cows graze on the misty hills, and enjoying the fantastic botanically inspired feast prepared by chef Heather @manna__himeville.

I’m so grateful for my husband who was a great support, from manning my print sales stand, to rolling stones off the barn roof to let in extra light after the presentation! Thank you Julie for your heartfelt introduction, and most of all, Kirsty for putting together such a memorable event!

The beautiful Sani Flower Walk this weekend revealed many orchid treasures! Crossing the border into Lesotho, the high elevation plato is one of our country’s endemism hotspots, with multitudes of plant species that grow nowhere else in the world.

My highlight was sitting on the mountain slope to paint the two orchids Brownlea macroceras and Disa cephalotes, the latter mimicking Scabiosa to attract the pollinator🥰
