Planning some pollinator activity… Under my pencil Planning some pollinator activity… Under my pencil is the male wasp (Hemipepsis capensis) responsible for pollinating the orchid Disa bivalvata.

This is one small interaction in a very intriguing situation… Lots yet to be revealed.

Beautiful memories from the Wild Orchids of South Beautiful memories from the Wild Orchids of South Africa (WOSA) Conference 2026 🌸🌷🌾 held in the beautiful Dullstroom, the “place of eternal mist”, the highest elevation town in South Africa.

Misty mountain passes, muddy wetlands, and an entourage of orchids and orchid enthusiasts! Such a joy to be part of this community!

I was very fortunate to see the rare orchid Pachit I was very fortunate to see the rare orchid Pachites bodkinii, an endemic species growing in the Cape Floral Kingdom of South Africa.

🔥🔥What made the encounter so special, is that this orchid is fire-dependent and will ONLY flower the first year after a burn, which on average accurs only every 10–14 years! The particular nature reserve burned in April 2025. We were in fact out searching for another post-fire orchid, then happened on our way to stumble upon these special plants!

There are tiny little green glands behind the labellum that carry a floral oil releasing the most incredible scent…(to attract both the pollinator, and the wandering botanical artist!)…

  just imagine,
sweet, like sundried peaches, 🍑

yet soft, powdery-scented…

In my painting, only a single flower is turned away to reveal the scented oil glands — they are absolutely minute, and can easily be overlooked (you might need to zoom in🧐). I couldn’t have painted them more accurately on vellum than with a special Japanese 3/0 Interlon brush sourced with special help by @miekoishikawa_botanical and @leanne_stewart19.

If only I could find a brush that would paint in that mesmerising scent…

Big thanks to Prof Timo van der Niet, Associate Professor at @university_of_cape_town, who accompanied us on the field trip and provided valuable information from his academic research on Pachites.

✨NEW PAINTING REVEAL✨ Get lost in the buzzing won ✨NEW PAINTING REVEAL✨

Get lost in the buzzing wonderland of the frilly, small-flowered Cinderella orchid. Painted on vellum, the scene portrays the lively ecosystem surrounding this endemic orchid from the Cape Floral Kingdom. 🪲🐛🐝15 little insects persuaded me, whether by sound, humour or acrobatics, to paint them into this magical scene. Some of them were really🕵🏻‍♀️ tiny!

Anyone for an eco version of “Where’s Wally”…?

Big thank you to team @wetink_design for doing a stellar job to capture the subtleties of the artwork and doing a fantastic reproduction of certified, archival prints.

    ✨NEW PAINTING REVEAL✨ This week at @coot.club I h ✨NEW PAINTING REVEAL✨
This week at @coot.club I had the pleasure of revealing the second vellum painting in our series of indigenous orchids growing on the reserve.

It is called the Small-flowered Cinderella Orchid (Acrolophia micrantha). Despite the pollinator still unidentified, my fieldwork revealed an entire wonderland of life happening in the orchid’s natural environment. The temptation was too big, with adorable little creatures all putting on their best behaviour to draw my attention, resulting in the inclusion of 15 creatures painted into the scene! It’s a bit of a “Where is Wally” situation… It includes incredible discoveries such as the life cycle if the Lunate lady beetle, a wattle seed weevil taking flight looking like a scene from ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, and a monkey beetle landing on a drumstick flower, to name only a few…
