One of the many highlights of my recent trip to Ne One of the many highlights of my recent trip to New York, was a visit with @carolwoodinbotanical to the @soi128 to go see the 29th Annual International exhibition of botanical art, where my orchid painting, titled “Cinderella’s wonderland”, received the ASBA Eleanor Wunderlich award.

This prestigious award is given in memory of the late Eleanor Brandreth Wunderlich (1925-2008) a revered American botanical artist, author and educator. The award recognises “exceptional artistic excellence, mastery of medium, and scientific precision in a botanical artwork”. I am grateful to @asba.art for this special recognition of the painting!

The day was further enriched when joined by @benyesil as well as @hyperallergic for a marvellous interview!

I shouldn’t have a favourite class, but there was I shouldn’t have a favourite class, but there was something extraordinary about the Silverpoint workshop I was privileged to teach at the @asba.art Conference in Denver in October 2026✨

After taking a dive into the history of the materials, philosophy and techniques used by the Renaissance artists, we visited Africa in its rich tradition and uses of plant species from the Helichrysum family. The results: the shimmering joy of drawing in age-old metalpoint, followed by embellishing our work with natural pigments still freshly scented with notes of Africa.

Our pigments were held in tiny ceramic pallets and bespoke rinsing pots, all handmade by myself with the loving help of @louisejenningsartist. I am endlessly grateful for the knowledge of natural pigment extraction taught to me by @nixxmiles @forage_ink . And a highlight, the perfect opportunity to launch my new range of hand carved, wooden styluses, holding Sterling Silver and 18ct Gold metal points, brought to life with the meticulous help of jeweller @crowned_by_ester (More info coming soon…)

Beautiful South African sample specimens collected and dried by @melindalaz straight out of the @denverbotanic 🌼

🙏🏼Thank you to every student who joined the class with so much enthusiasm, it was such a joy meeting and teaching all of you!! 🌼💛

All in all, the culmination of a true labour of love. Thank you @asba.art for the wonderful platform and teaching opportunity!

I was incredibly fortunate to be teaching at this I was incredibly fortunate to be teaching at this year’s ASBA Conference for botanical artists in Denver, Colorado. We started with a two day, pre-conference workshop, all about fieldwork and preparation for painting orchids in the wild.

The @denverbotanic was the perfect location to serve as the tropical environment hosting a variety of orchids, and final studies were worked on back in the comfort of the @halcyonhotels.

A lovely group of artists, showing great enthusiasm and willingness to be gently nudged out of their comfort zones!

Thank you @melindalaz for being a super-host, and all your arrangements making this a highlight of the trip!

Recently returned from a lovely trip to the specta Recently returned from a lovely trip to the spectacular @afriorchids in Mbombela (Nelspruit), where I was invited to teach an orchid painting workshop for three beautiful days.

Over the weekend’s Open Days, the public could visit the extraordinary hothouses filled with over half a million orchids! The event was concluded with an opportunity for me to give a presentation, sharing the stories of my art and the intricacies of specialised pollination processes.

Grateful for all the warmth and generosity with which we were hosted!

In contrast to what its name suggests, Babiana pygmaea (meaning “dwarf”) has the largest flowers in this genus.

This endangered species only grows in a small strip of seasonally damp soils in the critically endangered vegetation type of Swartland Granite Renosterveld. It has a very limited distribution, threatened by grazing, agricultural practices and invasive plants. My specimen is from the special ex situ collection of rare and endangered plants cared for at the @subotgardens in Stellenbosch.

There was a surreal joy that permeated my experience of painting this beautiful plant. The painting process preserves the species’ portrait, in a way “eternalising” its existence as it is captured on the archival vellum surface. The artwork celebrates the fragility and timeless ethereal, almost pearly appearance of the flowers… slowly applying the tiniest little brush strokes of paint for many hours and days that provided in return a rewarding fulfilment of spending time in awe and wonder, time-hours that became space and dimension void of man-made anything.

As I was working, a single little honeybee visited the flowers, getting completely dusted in white pollen grains, fulfilling her essential role of pollination.

“The whole earth is filled with awe at Your wonders…” (Ps 65:8)

Currently on exhibition at Stellenbosch University Botanical Gardens.

A creeping succulent with long trailing branches a A creeping succulent with long trailing branches and big white flowers that only open from about 2 pm, and close again as the light fades around 5pm. Talk about time restrictions!!

This beautiful succulent is endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa. Near threatened due to extensive habitat loss to urban expansion, crop cultivation as well as competition from invasive species.

Painted from the special collection of plants looked after by @subotgarden. This piece done in memory of the late Donovan Kirkwood.

Come see the original work at the official launch exhibition showing from 9 May — 20 September 2026.
